Time to stop running your own IT services

Loosen control and reclaim your valuable time.

A topic that comes up regularly in conversation with prospective customers and other IT organisations is about losing control of IT by moving to Microsoft Office 365 instead of running your own servers.

My answer is to ask the business owner: what is the product or service that you offer? If the answer is not running IT services, then the choice is simple. It is even true for my own IT consultancy.

Many business people would (and still do) disagree with the choice I made to position Microsoft Online Services to our customers as my recommended option. There are several reasons why, and these translate directly as to why SMB customers should choose Office 365 instead of running their own servers.

I spent most of my career working for organisations that support customers’ IT environments. I received many calls in the evenings and weekends about issues with clients’ servers. IT is fallible. Hardware fails, software has bugs and humans make errors.

Previous companies I worked at provided fantastic services to customers and generally didn’t have any issues. However, when you support hundreds of customers and servers the odds are against you.

Since I started selling cloud services two years ago I have never received a call after hours from any customer about any issue with Office 365. Granted there have been some problems with the service along the way, but the great thing is that I don’t have to worry about fixing it myself or calling one of my staff to resolve it. Microsoft’s dedicated team of IT experts are on hand 24×7 to identify problems with the service and resolve them as quickly as possible.

(Previously I wrote about why Microsoft is better at running its own products in the cloud than we can ourselves.)

What does this mean for me as a technology user and business owner? My personal time with my family and friends is uninterrupted. Microsoft operates a significant portion of my IT systems for me so I can focus on running my business.

And the same applies to nearly any SMB. It’s time to stop running your own IT services.
